Staff Engineer

Los Angeles, CAFull-timeHybrid$200K – $250K + Equity

About the Role

We're looking for a Staff Engineer to lead the technical direction of the Proaction platform. You'll own the architecture, set engineering standards, and ship the foundational systems that everything else is built on. This is a role for someone who wants to build something from the ground up and have a massive impact on a fast-growing company.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the technical architecture of the Proaction platform — a NestJS API backed by PostgreSQL with row-level security, Kysely as the query builder, and Clerk for authentication
  • Own and ship complex, cross-cutting technical projects end-to-end across our modular monolith backend and Next.js frontend
  • Evolve our multi-tenant data architecture — including the RLS enforcement layer, entity hierarchy, and cross-module port/adapter boundaries
  • Make build-vs-buy decisions and evaluate technical tradeoffs with a pragmatic lens
  • Set engineering standards, review code, and mentor the engineering team
  • Collaborate directly with the founder and product team to translate business goals into technical strategy
  • Be hands-on — this is a building role, not a management role

Our Stack

  • Backend: NestJS 11, TypeScript, Kysely (typed SQL query builder), PostgreSQL with row-level security
  • Auth: Clerk (JWT verification, webhook-driven sync via Svix)
  • Architecture: Modular monolith with hexagonal-style port/adapter boundaries between domains. CLS-bound transactions for per-request tenant isolation
  • Frontend: Next.js 16 (App Router), React, Tailwind CSS, Framer Motion
  • Infrastructure: Docker, Vercel, Sentry, structured logging via Pino
  • Testing: Jest (unit + e2e with real Postgres), Vitest, Playwright

What We're Looking For

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with demonstrated technical leadership
  • Deep expertise in TypeScript and Node.js — you've built and scaled production NestJS or Express applications
  • Strong PostgreSQL skills — you're comfortable with RLS, migrations, query optimization, and data modeling for multi-tenant systems
  • Experience designing modular, maintainable architectures that balance clean boundaries with shipping speed
  • Track record of shipping high-quality software at startups (seed to Series B preferred)
  • Strong opinions, loosely held — you can drive technical decisions while staying open to new information
  • Bonus: experience with Kysely, Clerk, Next.js, or building workflow/orchestration engines

AI at Proaction

We're an AI-native company. Every team member receives a dedicated monthly AI token budget, and we expect you to use it. AI-assisted development isn't optional here — it's how we ship. We use tools like Claude Code and Cursor daily, and we expect you to push the boundaries of what's possible when engineers collaborate with AI across architecture decisions, code generation, debugging, and code review. If you're excited about working at the frontier of AI-augmented engineering, you'll fit right in.

Why Proaction

Fleet management is a $30B+ industry running on software from the 90s. We're building the modern replacement — and you'll be the person defining how it's built. You'll have direct access to customers, real ownership over the technical direction, and equity in a company solving a massive problem.
